ISEE RADAR PDF Print E-mail

ISEE has developed a compact and robust 24GHz radar sensor (ISM Band covered) for automotive, industrial, educational or home applications. It can accurately measure distance, velocity and physical properties of objects. 

The Radar Evaluation KIT is a complete solution that includes a planar antenna, a 24GHz microwave sensor front-end, a PLL controlled FMCW DDS Modulator for high precision measurements and excellent modulation linearity, and also an IGEP board based on OMAP3530 processor for fast radar signal processing and full connectivity (USB, Ethernet, WiFi on demand). In addition, we supply all the basic open source code to easily interface with the radar and start your specific application, making very easy to configure the desired DDS modulation and ADC. We also supply basic functions in C to make FFT signal processing.

The advantage of this solution is its compact size, low power consumption (<9W) and low manufacturing costs.

The ISEE K-band Radar uses FM-CW radar technique

ISEE FM-CW Radar sends a Linear Frequency Modulated RF signal in the vicinity of @24GHz, K-Band.

If the signal is reflected by any object present in the field of measurement, the received signal is mixed with the current transmitted, thus obtaining the frequency difference between them (called IF). This IF is proportional to the distance to the object, so if we can precisely measure this frequency we can obtain the exact distance to the object.

Taking profit of the processing power of IGEP, it is possible to sample data in real time and make complex processing like FFT and Autoregressive filtering in order to extract all possible information’s about the far object like distance, speed, dielectric constant, discrimination between different objects, etc.

 

MAIN APPLICATIONS

Automotive: Anti-collision Control, Parking Aid, Lane Change Assistant, Forward Collision Warning or Blind Spot Detection. K-band FMCW Radars are specially suited for automotive applications. ISEE can develop such kind of products under agreement.

Traffic: Traffic Management Systems or Traffic Statistics. Radar Sensors have the advantage to work on any weather conditions including rain, dust, darkness, etc. so they are a good alternative to substitute traditional systems like IR or TV that are very affected on these situations.

Speed Information Displays. In some areas like schools, hospitals or public works are a good solution to slow down traffic.

Educational: Specially indicated for Universities as several fields of knowledge are covered by the radar: Students can learn making Antenna measurements, PLL analysis, DDS modulation, VCO signal monitoring, Experiment different radar applications like range and speed measurements but also dielectric constant measurements and other object phisical properties. Students can also learn about signal processing (FFT, digital filters, etc) and software programming. Special discounts are applied for universities.

Domotic: Radar Presence Detection, Peripheral Intrusion Security Alarm, Door openers, or People Counting. Doppler and FMCW Radars are well suited for this wide range of applications and K-Band is a good choice to avoid interference from other saturated bands. Weather conditions is also one of the most important reasons why radars are substituting traditional IR and TV systems.

Robotics: For the same reasons as explained on Traffic, radars are becoming the best solution for most of robotics applications where weather conditions are a must.

Intelligent Lighting Systems: A new way to save energy by activation of public lights only when detection of pedestrians or automobiles.

Police: Speed Guns or Traffic Speed Control. There are several commonly used bands, K-band is one of them.

Sports: Precise Speed measurements. Normally Doppler radar is enough for most of the applications but FMCW can give more accurate precision and features.

Geo-Radar: Archeology, Civil Engineering, Construction Quality Control , Concrete Scanning, Forensics, Geology, Mining or Ice-Snow investigation. K-Band Radars are not strong on this area due to the high attenuation on most of the applications.

Marine: Alternative to old Magnetron pulsed Radars, Better accuracy, Drastically reduces power consumption and operate at very Safe Power Levels (100mW), allowing to extend the market also for small ships applications. K-Band FMCW radars have a great opportunity in this area.

Industry: Tank Level Gauges or Flow Metering. K-band FMCW Radars are the most indicated for some applications. 

Aerospatial: Traditional Radar systems and Altimeters.

 TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

Lighting and traffic can be managed more efficiently using Radar detectors: lighting control depending on amount of vehicles, speed, etc.

 

TRAFFIC STATISTICS:

Statistics example-1: Number of vehicles within an specific speed range after 1 hour monitoring.

 


Statistics example-2: Number of counted vehicles at each hour during one day.

PARKING MANAGEMENT:



A single radar can monitor a row of vehicles on a parking area. Each vehicle is detected by a sinc shape when making the FFT of the radar IF signal. When a vehicle leaves its position, its corresponding sinc shape dissapear and a new free place is informed on the exact position.


 

SPEED INFORMATION DISPLAYS:

Possibility to integrate the radar on a display for speed detection and information.
